Venice is an inspiring place for artists. The combination of its unique architecture and fabulous light is breathtaking. The sketches for this painting of St Mark`s Basilica were made at 6.30.am. - even the pigeons were only just starting to get up! - when the rising Sun throws a dramatic shaft of light across the Square.
